Nest-sharing behavior of captive Broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris): cooperation or exploitation?

چکیده
Abstract Communal egg-laying is not frequently observed in crocodilians that exhibit nest attendance. However, it has been reported for both wild and captive Caiman latirostris . To understand the proximate causes of communal nesting, we aim to describe nesting behavior caimans during a population. Video cameras were placed at nests females was monitored throughout three incubation periods. We documented analyzed social behavioral data. Nest-sharing consisted several congregating performing construction, vigilance maintenance. It all previous egg-laying. After first laying, one female prevented others from approaching. The second negatively affected clutch. Working together same would appear be an exploitative rather than cooperative activity, could competitive interaction, due limited suitable sites or overcrowding captivity.

Parentage test in broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris, Crocodylidae) using microsatellite DNA
In this study, microsatellite markers, developed for Alligator mississipiensis and Caiman latirostris, were used to assess parentage among individuals from the captive colony of Caiman latirostris at the University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Many of the females in the colony were full siblings, which made maternal identification difficult due to genotypic similarity. Even s...
متن کاملRegression equations between body and head measurements in the broad-snouted Caiman (Caiman latirostris).
In the present study, regression equations between body and head length measurements for the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) are presented. Age and sex are discussed as sources of variation for allometric models. Four body-length, fourteen head-length, and ten ratio variables were taken from wild and captive animals. With the exception of body mass, log-transformation did not improve ...
متن کاملIsotope incorporation in broad-snouted caimans (crocodilians)
The trophic ecology and migration of vertebrate species have been increasingly studied using stable isotope analysis. However, this approach requires knowledge on how dietary isotopic values are reflected in consumers' tissues. To date, this information has only been obtained for a handful of ectotherms; in particular, little is known about crocodilians. In this study, diet-tissue discriminatio...
متن کاملDistribution of populations of broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris, Daudin 1802, Alligatoridae) in the São Francisco River basin, Brazil.
We surveyed populations of the broad-snouted caiman, Caiman latirostris, throughout the São Francisco River basin, from Três Marias reservoir, State of Minas Gerais, to the river delta, at the boarder of Sergipe and Alagoas states. We registered the occurrence of crocodilians in 61% of all surveyed localities (n = 64), in which the presence of C. latirostris was confirmed in 44% of the surveyed...
متن کاملCoccidian parasites (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from two species of caimans, Caiman yacare daudin and Caiman latirostris daudin (Alligatoridae), from Paraguay.
From October 1986 to January 1987, feces from 119 Caiman yacare and 12 Caiman latirostris were collected in Paraguay and later examined for coccidian oocysts; 69 of 119 (58%) samples from C. yacare and 3 of 12 (25%) samples from C. latirostris contained coccidian oocysts. Two eimerians infected C. yacare and both are described as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria paraguayensis n. sp. a...
